China Donates Home Appliances to SMILES Girls Center

  On March 3rd, a handover ceremony was held in the Chinese embassy. H.E. Dr. Zhao Yongchen, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Grenada donated some home appliances to SMILES Girls Center on behalf of the Chinese government. Hon. Delma Thomas, Minister for Social Development, Housing & Community Empowerment and Ann David-Antoine, Chairperson of the Board of the Child Protection Authority attended the ceremony.


  In his speech, H.E. Ambassador Zhao Yongchen said that social welfare and community empowerment is one of the focal points of the bilateral cooperation. The Second Phase of China-Aid Low-Income Housing project is progressing well and will provide another 647 units of houses to local families at the end of this year. Since 2005, more than 2000 Grenadians have been to China for training courses or scholarships under China-Aid human capacity training program. According to the 2020 Budget of Grenada, gender mainstreaming, gender equality, social and economic empowerment of women and girls are the key priorities of Grenadian government which is taking measures to eliminate violence and abuse, and protect women and children. The Chinese government is happy to make concerted contributions to child protection. Ambassador Zhao assured that China is willing to coordinate its assistance with the National Sustainable Development Plan of Grenada and together build a community with a shared future of humankind.

  Hon. Minister Delma Thomas expressed sincere thanks to Ambassador Zhao for the generous gifts to the Girls Center. She said that the appliances are the first batches of donation for the center and will kick start more generosity from the society. The long-standing support from the Chinese government has promoted the economic and social development of Grenada, especially the Low-Income Housing project, which greatly promotes the social welfare in Grenada. The Grenadian government is willing to deepen the cooperation with the Chinese government and bring benefit to the people of Grenada.
