Her Excellency Dame Cecile La Grenade, Governor-General,

Hon. Peter David, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Labour,

Rear Admirals Guan Bailin and Qin Wei, Commanders of Mission Harmony 2018,

Other members of the Cabinet, Members of Parliament and Senate, Permanent Secretaries,

 Other members of the diplomatic corps,

Friends from media, other invited guests,

Ladies and gentleman,

Good Evening.

In this beautiful breezy night, we gather here in a joyous mood for this grand occasion to mark 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. First of all, I’d like to welcome all of you present today and express our heartfelt gratitude to the friends from all walks of life that have long supported and promoted China-Grenada relations and friendship. Yesterday, the China’s PLA Navy Hospital Ship Ark Peace visited Grenada for a second time within 3 years. In the following week, Ark Peace will provide first class and free medical service, conduct academic exchanges and bring tangible benefits to Grenadian people. Tonight, some of the officers and soldiers are also invited. A very warm welcome to you all!

For China, the past 69 years has been a journey from being weak and poor to gaining independence and becoming prosperous. It has witnessed China’s historic transformation, in which the nation has stood up, grown rich, and is becoming strong. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, China adheres to socialism with Chinese Characteristics and has developed itself into the second largest economy, with growing roles and increasing influence in the world.

The year 2018 is a remarkable, eventful and momentous one in modern Chinese history. It marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up. The most rapid and spectacular progress has been achieved in the past four decades since China began its reform and opening-up. Thanks to that policy, China has created a miracle of economic and social development, with 740 million people being lifted out of poverty, which is also a major contribution to the world.

The year 2018 also witnessed the start of full implementation of the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party and a new round of reform and development in China. Socialism with Chinese Characteristics has entered a new era, and all Chinese people are working hard to build China into a great modern socialist country and realize our “Chinese Dream”. Despite the uncertainties and instability of the global economic environment, the economic growth rate of China reached 6.8% in the first half of this year, and it is expected to achieve medium-high growth throughout the year.

In 2018, we made further progress in China's foreign affairs on all fronts. We successfully held several important conferences, including Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit and the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. More and more countries have joined in the Belt and Road Initiative. China’s goal of pursuing security, development and prosperity for all countries was fully demonstrated. China will continue its efforts to safeguard world peace, contribute to global development, and uphold international order.

We believe that China's economy will continue to develop steadily, science and technology will continue to make leap-forward progress, education and culture will develop more rapidly, and people's living standards will be improved day by day. In the process of development, China is committed to establishing a fair and just international order, promoting common development of the international economy and common prosperity of mankind. We support economic globalization, oppose unilateralism and trade protectionism, and uphold the authority and efficacy of the multilateral trading system.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The bilateral relations between China and Grenada have been further consolidated, with increasing exchanges of high-level visits and satisfactory economic cooperation. The upgrading of the Maurice Bishop International Airport is making steady progress, and the second phase of low-income housing project is also being implemented as planned. Just two weeks ago, the two governments signed the Memorandum of Understanding on joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. With Grenada officially joining in the family of Belt and Road Initiative, we will carry out closer cooperation under the framework and comprehensively enhance the level of practical cooperation in various fields.

People-to-people exchanges have always been a bridge connecting the hearts of two peoples. So far, more than 1500 Grenadians have been awarded scholarships or training program opportunities. Among them, many outstanding young Grenadians received Chinese government scholarships and started their study in China.

Last month, we co-hosted the first China-Caribbean Conference on Anti-corruption Law Enforcement Cooperation, which is a historic event. The conference was attended by high level representatives from 12 countries and issued a joint statement. It showcases the confidence and commitment of China and the Caribbean in fighting against corruption and money laundering, and has made important contribution to fight against corruption in the world.

Ladies and gentlemen,

China and Grenada are both developing countries and we face similar development situation and tasks and broad common interests. We look forward to working with Grenada to jointly implement the fruit of the MOU on Belt and Road Initiative, to further enhance mutual trust, expand exchanges and promote China-Grenada relations to a new high.

We are willing to share the successful experience of China's development and help Grenada to formulate a strategic plan for national economic and social development. We are delighted to see Grenada playing a more constructive role in the Latin American and Caribbean regional affairs to make due contribution to the formulation of a new international order. We are ready to work closely with the Government and people of Grenada to build a community with shared future of mankind, move toward a new type of international relations, and build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity.

Now, may I invite you to join me in a toast:

To the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China;

To the successful visit of the Ark Peace;

To the happiness and well-being of our peoples;

To China-Grenada friendship;

To the health and happiness of everyone present;

Cheers!
